When was the Battle of Waterloo?

Napoleon Bonaparte escaped exile on Elba in early 1815 and returned to power in France for a period known as the Hundred Days. On 18 June 1815, near the village of Waterloo south of Brussels, his army faced a British-led coalition under the Duke of Wellington and a Prussian army under Gebhard von Blücher. The late arrival of the Prussians in the afternoon proved decisive, and the French army collapsed by evening. Napoleon abdicated days later and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, where he died in 1821. The battle ended more than two decades of war between France and much of Europe.
