Whose telescope revealed the moons of Jupiter?
ScienceAstronomy
Quick Answer
Galileo Galilei discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter in 1610. They were the first moons found orbiting another planet.
The Full Story
Galileo Galilei observed Jupiter through a telescope in January 1610 and identified four small bodies moving around it. He named them the Medicean stars; they are now called Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Their motion showed that not everything in the sky orbits Earth, supporting heliocentrism. Galileo published his findings in Sidereus Nuncius in 1610.
