Whose telescope observations supported heliocentrism?

The Italian scientist Galileo Galilei used one of the first astronomical telescopes, starting in 1609, to gather evidence supporting the heliocentric model in which the Earth orbits the Sun, an idea earlier proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus. Galileo observed the four largest moons of Jupiter orbiting that planet, showing that not everything revolves around the Earth, and he saw the phases of Venus, which only make sense if Venus orbits the Sun. He also mapped craters on the Moon and spots on the Sun. His support for heliocentrism brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church, which tried him and placed him under house arrest for the rest of his life.
