Whose sculpture is The Thinker?

The Thinker is the work of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. He first designed the figure around 1880 for The Gates of Hell, a monumental bronze doorway inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, where it sat above the scene and was originally called The Poet, representing Dante himself. Rodin later enlarged it as an independent sculpture, and the monumental version was first shown in 1904. Because bronze casts can be made from the original moulds, more than 20 full-size versions exist around the world. One of the most famous sits in the garden of the Musée Rodin in Paris, near Rodin’s own grave.
