Whose sculpture is David?

Michelangelo was just 26 when he began carving David in 1501, from a huge block of Carrara marble that other sculptors had started working on and abandoned decades earlier. Completed in 1504, the statue stands about 5.17 metres tall and weighs around 6 tonnes. It depicts the biblical hero before his fight with Goliath, tense and focused rather than triumphant. David was unveiled in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence on 8 September 1504 as a symbol of the city standing up to more powerful rivals. It was moved indoors to the Accademia Gallery in 1873, and a replica has stood in the piazza since 1910.
