Whose paintings are the Sunflowers?

The Sunflowers are a series of still-life paintings by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. He painted the first four in August 1888 in Arles, in the south of France, to decorate the room of his friend Paul Gauguin, who was coming to stay. He later made several repeat versions, so there are now five large vase paintings in museums around the world, including London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum. Their bold yellows showed off newly available pigments and his thick, energetic brushwork. In 1987 one version sold for about $39.9 million, then a record price for any artwork.
