Whose painting is The Night Watch?

The Night Watch was painted by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn and completed in 1642. It shows a company of Amsterdam civic guards led by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, captured in dramatic motion rather than the stiff rows typical of group portraits of the time. The famous name came later, because darkened varnish made the scene look as though it took place at night; it is actually set in daylight. The canvas is enormous, about 3.6 by 4.4 metres, and it was trimmed on all sides in 1715 to fit a wall in Amsterdam’s town hall. Since 2019 the Rijksmuseum has studied and restored it in public as part of Operation Night Watch.
