The Kiss was painted by Gustav Klimt between 1907 and 1908, during what is known as his Golden Period. It shows a couple embracing on a flowery meadow, wrapped in robes decorated with shimmering patterns and real gold leaf. Klimt was a founder of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from traditional academic art in 1897. The Austrian government bought the painting even before it was completely finished, and it has belonged to the Belvedere museum in Vienna ever since. It is a square canvas, about 1.8 metres on each side.
