Whose painting is The Birth of Venus?

The Birth of Venus was painted by Sandro Botticelli, one of the leading artists of the Italian Renaissance, around 1484 to 1486. It shows the goddess Venus arriving at the shore on a giant scallop shell, blown by wind gods and greeted by a figure holding a flowered cloak. The painting was probably made for a member of the powerful Medici family in Florence. It was one of the first large paintings since ancient times to show a female nude based on classical mythology rather than a religious subject. Today it is one of the most famous works in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
