Whose painting is American Gothic?

American Gothic was painted in 1930 by Grant Wood, an American artist from Iowa. It shows a stern farmer holding a pitchfork beside a woman, in front of a small white house with a pointed Gothic-style window. The models were Wood’s sister, Nan Wood Graham, and his dentist, Byron McKeeby, and Wood intended the pair to be seen as a father and his daughter. The house that inspired it still stands in Eldon, Iowa, and is now a visitor attraction. The painting won a prize at the Art Institute of Chicago the year it was made, and the museum has owned it ever since.
