Whose epic is The Odyssey?

The Odyssey is traditionally attributed to Homer, the legendary Greek poet also credited with The Iliad. Scholars think it was composed around the late 8th or early 7th century BC, growing out of a long tradition of oral storytelling before it was written down. It follows the hero Odysseus on his ten-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, facing the Cyclops, the Sirens, the witch Circe and many other dangers. Meanwhile his wife, Penelope, holds off suitors trying to take his place. The poem has about 12,000 lines divided into 24 books, and very little is known for certain about Homer himself.
