Quick Answer
Asterix was created by French writer René Goscinny and artist Albert Uderzo, first appearing in 1959.
The Full Story
Asterix the Gaul first appeared on 29 October 1959 in the French magazine Pilote. Writer René Goscinny and artist Albert Uderzo set the stories in 50 BC, in a small Gaulish village that holds out against Roman invaders thanks to a magic potion. The comics are packed with puns, historical jokes and caricatures. After Goscinny's death in 1977, Uderzo continued the series alone, and later new creative teams took over. The books have sold hundreds of millions of copies and have been translated into more than 100 languages and dialects.
