The Lord of the Rings was written by J. R. R. Tolkien, a professor of Anglo-Saxon and English language at the University of Oxford. It was a sequel to his 1937 children’s book The Hobbit and took him more than a decade to write. Tolkien intended it as a single work, but his publisher split it into three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, released in 1954 and 1955. The story follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins on a quest to destroy the One Ring before the dark lord Sauron can reclaim it. It is one of the best-selling books ever, with well over 100 million copies sold.
