South Sudan is the world’s newest widely recognised country. It gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011, after a referendum in January that year in which about 98.8% of voters chose to separate. The vote followed a 2005 peace agreement that ended decades of civil war between the north and south of Sudan. South Sudan joined the United Nations on 14 July 2011, becoming its 193rd member state. Its capital is Juba, and although it has large oil reserves, it has faced serious conflict and humanitarian crises since independence.
