Which is the most popular programming language?

There is no single official count, so popularity is measured in different ways. The TIOBE Index, based on search engine data, has ranked Python first since 2021, helped by its easy syntax and its central role in data science and artificial intelligence. JavaScript runs in every web browser and has been the most used language in the Stack Overflow Developer Survey for more than a decade. GitHub reported in 2025 that TypeScript, a typed version of JavaScript, had become the most used language on its platform, just ahead of Python. Older languages such as Java, C, C++ and SQL also remain in the top tier.
