Which is the largest gulf in the world?

The Gulf of Mexico is an ocean basin bordered by the United States to the north, Mexico to the west and south, and Cuba to the south-east. It covers roughly 1.55 to 1.6 million square kilometres and connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the Straits of Florida and to the Caribbean Sea through the Yucatán Channel. Its deepest point, the Sigsbee Deep, lies about 4,380 metres below the surface. Warm water flowing through the gulf, called the Loop Current, feeds into the Gulf Stream. In 2025 the US government began using the name 'Gulf of America' for federal purposes, while Mexico and most international bodies continue to call it the Gulf of Mexico.
