China and India dominate world rice production, together accounting for more than half of the global harvest. For decades China was the clear leader, but recent estimates from the US Department of Agriculture suggest India’s harvest has drawn level or narrowly overtaken it. India is also by far the world’s largest rice exporter, responsible for around 40% of global rice exports in recent years. Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam are the next biggest producers. About 90% of the world’s rice is grown and eaten in Asia, and rice is a staple food for more than half of the world’s population.
