The United States has far more airports than any other nation, with estimates ranging from about 13,000 to nearly 20,000 depending on whether small private airstrips, heliports and seaplane bases are counted. Only around 5,000 of these are open for public use, and just a few hundred have scheduled passenger airline service. The huge number reflects the popularity of private and small-plane flying in America, as well as vast rural areas, including Alaska, where some communities can only be reached by air. Brazil is usually ranked second, with a few thousand airfields. Most of the world’s busiest passenger airports are also in the United States.
