The Full Story
The Rüppell’s griffon vulture holds the record for the highest confirmed bird flight altitude. A well-known 1973 observation recorded one at about 11,300 meters above sea level after it was struck by a jet engine. This extraordinary altitude is possible because the species is adapted to thin air and uses rising warm air currents. Few birds can operate anywhere near this height.
