Which Bird Can Fly Backwards?
biologyanimals
Quick Answer
Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards with sustained, controlled flight.
The Full Story
Hummingbirds are the only birds capable of true sustained backward flight. They achieve this with a unique figure-eight wing stroke and ball-and-socket shoulder joints that allow 180° wing rotation. Their wings beat 12–80 times per second (up to 200 in some species), enabling hovering, backward, upward, and even upside-down flight. This extraordinary manoeuvrability allows them to feed from flowers while stationary in mid-air. There are about 360 hummingbird species, all native to the Americas.
Key Facts
1.A hummingbird's heart beats up to 1,260 times per minute during flight.
2.They consume roughly half their body weight in nectar daily.
3.The bee hummingbird, at about 5 cm, is the smallest bird in the world.
