Where is the source of the Nile?

The Nile has two main branches that meet at Khartoum in Sudan. The White Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Jinja in Uganda, the spot British explorer John Hanning Speke identified as the source in 1858, although its most distant headwaters are streams feeding the Kagera River in Rwanda and Burundi. The Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands and supplies most of the water and fertile silt during the summer flood. From Khartoum the combined river flows north through Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean. The Nile is about 6,650 km long and is usually ranked as the world’s longest river.
