Where Is the Serengeti?

The Serengeti is a vast grassland ecosystem covering approximately 30,000 km² in northern Tanzania, with the Maasai Mara National Reserve forming its northern extension in Kenya. The name comes from the Maasai word "siringet," meaning "endless plains." The Serengeti is renowned for hosting the Great Migration — the annual circular movement of about 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles following seasonal rains and fresh grazing. The ecosystem supports the highest concentration of large mammals anywhere on Earth and includes lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hippos, and over 500 bird species.
