Derinkuyu, in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey, extends at least 85 metres deep across 18 levels and could shelter an estimated 20,000 people along with their livestock and food stores. Carved from soft volcanic tuff, it was used for centuries as a refuge during invasions and raids. The complex includes chapels, schools, storerooms, ventilation shafts, and heavy stone doors that could be rolled shut from inside. Nearby Kaymakli is another large underground city connected to Derinkuyu by a tunnel.
