Where is the equator?

The equator divides Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and is about 40,075 kilometres long. It passes through 13 countries, including Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and Indonesia. Ecuador is even named after it, the Spanish word for equator. Because Earth bulges at the middle, a person standing on the equator is spinning at about 1,670 kilometres per hour, faster than anywhere else on the planet. Places on the equator get roughly 12 hours of daylight every day of the year.
