Where is the Blue Lagoon?

The lagoon is fed by mineral-rich seawater that has been heated deep underground and used by the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant. Its milky blue colour comes from silica, which reflects blue light, and the water averages about 37 to 39 °C. Bathers began using the pools in the early 1980s, and the modern spa opened in 1999. The area sits on an active volcanic zone, and a series of eruptions near the town of Grindavík from late 2023 forced the lagoon to close temporarily several times. Protective barriers were built to steer lava flows away from the spa and power plant.
