Where is the largest rainforest in the world?

The Amazon rainforest, covering about 5.5 million square kilometres across nine South American countries, is by far the largest tropical rainforest on Earth, with roughly 60 percent lying in Brazil. It is home to an estimated 10 percent of all known species on the planet, including around 16,000 tree species and millions of insect species. The forest produces vast amounts of oxygen and stores an enormous quantity of carbon, playing a critical role in regulating the global climate. The Amazon River that runs through it discharges more water than the next seven largest rivers combined, and the forest generates much of its own rainfall through moisture recycling.
