The bay is scattered with around 1,600 limestone islands and islets, many rising steeply from emerald water as towers and pillars. They formed over millions of years as rainfall and the sea dissolved limestone, leaving caves, arches and hidden lagoons. Ha Long means descending dragon, from a legend that dragons came down to protect the land and spat out jewels that became the islands. UNESCO listed the bay as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Visitors explore it by traditional junk boats, kayaks and cruises that stop at caves such as Sung Sot, the Cave of Surprises.
