Cape Horn marks the northern edge of the Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. It is notorious for strong winds, huge waves and icebergs, and was long a graveyard for ships. Dutch navigators Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire first rounded it in 1616, naming it after the Dutch town of Hoorn. Before the Panama Canal opened in 1914, many ships had to sail around it to travel between the oceans. Sailors who rounded it traditionally earned the right to wear a gold earring.
