The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest in the world after the Nile and the Amazon. It rises in the glaciers of the Tanggula Mountains in Qinghai province and passes through major cities including Chongqing, Wuhan and Nanjing. Its basin is home to roughly a third of China's population and produces a large share of its rice. The river powers the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest power station by installed capacity. The Chinese call it Chang Jiang, meaning 'Long River'.
