Where do platypuses live?

Quick Answer

Platypuses live in freshwater rivers, streams and lakes in eastern Australia, including Tasmania.

The Full Story

The platypus is found from northern Queensland down through New South Wales and Victoria to Tasmania, and a population was introduced to Kangaroo Island. It spends much of its time foraging underwater, closing its eyes, ears and nostrils and finding prey through electroreceptors in its bill. It lives in burrows dug into riverbanks. The platypus is one of only five living species of monotremes, mammals that lay eggs. When European scientists first saw a preserved specimen in 1799, some suspected it was a hoax stitched together from different animals.
