Wild koalas are found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. They depend almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves, which are low in nutrients and toxic to most animals. To save energy, koalas sleep or rest for up to 18 to 22 hours a day. Habitat loss, bushfires, disease and car strikes have hit populations hard, and in 2022 koalas in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT were listed as endangered. Despite their nickname 'koala bear', they are marsupials, carrying their young in a pouch.
