There are about 18 species of penguin, and only a few, such as the emperor and Adélie penguins, live on Antarctica itself. Others breed on sub-Antarctic islands or on temperate coasts, such as the African penguin in South Africa and Namibia and the little penguin in Australia and New Zealand. The Galápagos penguin lives near the equator, and some of its colonies lie just north of it, making it the only penguin found naturally in the Northern Hemisphere. Penguins thrive where cold ocean currents bring plenty of fish, squid and krill. No wild penguins live in the Arctic, so polar bears and penguins never meet in nature.
