Where do kiwi birds live?

Kiwi are flightless birds found naturally nowhere else on Earth, and they are New Zealand's national symbol. There are five recognised species, including the North Island brown kiwi, the great spotted kiwi and the tiny little spotted kiwi. They are nocturnal and use nostrils at the tip of their long bill to sniff out worms and insects in the soil. Introduced predators such as stoats, cats and dogs have caused sharp declines, and there are estimated to be around 70,000 kiwi left. Conservation programmes such as Operation Nest Egg raise chicks in safety before releasing them into the wild.
