Where do kiwi birds live in the wild?

Kiwi are flightless birds native to New Zealand, where they live in forests, scrub, and grasslands. Different species are found on both the North and South Islands, and some also occur on offshore islands and in protected sanctuaries. They are nocturnal, using their long bills to probe the soil for worms and insects. Kiwi are national symbols of New Zealand.
