Where do okapis live?

The okapi is found in the north-eastern rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially the Ituri Forest. Although its striped legs make it look like a zebra, its closest living relative is the giraffe. It was one of the last large mammals to become known to Western science, being formally described in 1901. The okapi is listed as Endangered because of logging, mining, hunting and armed conflict in its range. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve, which protects a large share of the population, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
