The Full Story
There are three species of orangutan: the Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutan, all critically endangered. The Tapanuli orangutan, described as a new species only in 2017, lives in a small area of Sumatra and numbers fewer than 800 individuals. Orangutans are the largest tree-dwelling mammals and spend most of their lives in the forest canopy. Palm oil plantations, logging and fires have destroyed much of their habitat. Their name comes from Malay words meaning 'person of the forest'.
