Western gorillas live in countries including Gabon, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic, and are the most numerous. Eastern gorillas live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Mountain gorillas, a subspecies of eastern gorilla, live in the Virunga volcanoes and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and their numbers have risen to over 1,000 thanks to protection. Gorillas are the largest living primates, with adult males called silverbacks weighing up to around 200 kilograms. All gorilla species are critically endangered.
