When was the Mona Lisa stolen?

The thief was Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman who had worked at the Louvre. He hid inside the museum and walked out with the painting under his clothing on a Monday, when the museum was closed. The theft was not noticed until the next day. For 28 months the painting was missing, and even the poet Guillaume Apollinaire was briefly arrested and Pablo Picasso questioned. Peruggia was caught when he tried to sell the painting to Florence art dealer Alfredo Geri, and the worldwide publicity helped make the Mona Lisa the most famous painting on Earth.
