The Full Story
Tereshkova was a textile worker and amateur parachutist before being chosen from more than 400 applicants for the Soviet women's cosmonaut programme. During her flight she orbited Earth 48 times over nearly three days, logging more time in space than all American astronauts combined up to that point. Her call sign was 'Chaika', meaning seagull. She was just 26 years old at the time. The next woman in space, Svetlana Savitskaya, did not fly until 1982, and Sally Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983.
