HistoryArchaeology

Quick Answer

The Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian stone slab inscribed with the same text in three scripts. It helped scholars decode hieroglyphs.

The Full Story

The Rosetta Stone is a granodiorite slab discovered in 1799 near the Egyptian town of Rashid, known in English as Rosetta. It contains a decree written in ancient Greek, Demotic script and Egyptian hieroglyphs, all from 196 BCE. Because scholars could compare the scripts, the stone became the key to understanding hieroglyphic writing. It is now displayed at the British Museum in London and remains one of archaeology’s most famous objects.
