The Full Story
The EU grew from the European Coal and Steel Community of 1951 and the European Economic Community created by the 1957 Treaty of Rome. It took its current name with the Maastricht Treaty, which came into force in 1993. The single market allows goods, services, money and people to move freely between members. Twenty of its member states use the euro. The United Kingdom left in January 2020 after the 2016 Brexit referendum, leaving 27 members, and the EU won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.
