The Full Story
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded on 4 April 1949 by 12 countries, including the United States, Canada, the UK and France. Its core principle is Article 5, which says an armed attack on one member is an attack on all. Article 5 has been invoked only once, after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States. NATO has expanded several times, and Finland (2023) and Sweden (2024) joined most recently, bringing membership to 32. Its headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium.
