climatepolitics
Quick Answer
It is a 2015 international treaty in which countries agreed to limit global warming to well below 2Β°C.
The Full Story
The Paris Agreement was adopted at the COP21 climate summit in December 2015 and entered into force in November 2016. Its goal is to keep the rise in global average temperature well below 2Β°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5Β°C. Each country sets its own targets, called nationally determined contributions, and is expected to strengthen them roughly every five years. Nearly every country in the world has joined. Unlike the earlier Kyoto Protocol, it applies to both developed and developing nations.
