Why is a tomato a fruit?

Botanists classify fruits as the mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually containing seeds. Tomatoes grow from the flower and carry seeds inside, so they are botanically berries. Cooks, however, classify foods by taste and use, and tomatoes are savoury, so they are treated as vegetables. The question even reached the US Supreme Court: in the 1893 case Nix v. Hedden, the court ruled that tomatoes should be taxed as vegetables under import law because of how they are commonly eaten. Cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and pumpkins are also botanical fruits.
