Avocado trees were cultivated in Mesoamerica for thousands of years, and archaeological evidence from Mexico shows people eating avocados around 10,000 years ago. The name comes from the Nahuatl word 'ahuacatl'. The Hass avocado, now the world's most popular variety, came from a single tree grown by postal worker Rudolph Hass in California, patented in 1935. Mexico produces around a third of the world's avocados, with the state of Michoacán the major growing region. Avocados are technically large berries with a single seed.
