Whose Work Is Considered the First Computer Program?

Ada Lovelace translated an article by Italian engineer Luigi Menabrea about Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, a mechanical computer that was never completed. She added her own notes, which ended up about three times longer than the original article. In Note G she described a step-by-step method for the machine to calculate Bernoulli numbers, widely regarded as the first published computer program. She also suggested that such machines might one day manipulate symbols and even compose music. Lovelace was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron.
