The Full Story
In the 1990s, computers used many different ports for printers, keyboards and other devices. Ajay Bhatt, an Indian-American engineer at Intel, proposed a single plug-and-play connector to replace them. Intel worked with companies including Microsoft, IBM, Compaq, DEC, NEC and Nortel to develop the Universal Serial Bus. USB 1.0 was released in January 1996. Because the standard was made royalty-free, Bhatt did not earn royalties from its enormous success.
