Whose vaccine helped defeat polio?

Polio once paralysed and killed thousands of children every year. In 1955, the American virologist Jonas Salk announced a safe and effective injectable polio vaccine, a breakthrough greeted with worldwide relief. Albert Sabin soon developed an oral vaccine that was easier to give, which became central to global eradication campaigns. Salk famously refused to patent his vaccine, saying it belonged to the people. Polio has now been eliminated from almost every country on Earth.
