Whose printing press spread knowledge across Europe?

Around 1440, the German craftsman Johannes Gutenberg developed a printing press using movable metal type, revolutionising how information spread in Europe. Before it, books were copied by hand and were rare and costly. Gutenberg press could produce them quickly and cheaply, and his famous Gutenberg Bible was among the first major books printed. The technology triggered an explosion of literacy, learning, and the rapid spread of new ideas, helping drive the Renaissance and the Reformation.
