Whose invention was the telegraph?

Several inventors contributed to the electric telegraph, but Samuel Morse, along with collaborators, developed a practical system in the United States in the 1830s and 1840s. Morse and Alfred Vail created a code of dots and dashes, now called Morse code, to represent letters and numbers sent as electrical pulses along a wire. In 1844 Morse sent a famous message, What hath God wrought, over a line between Washington and Baltimore. In Britain, Cooke and Wheatstone developed a rival telegraph system around the same time. The telegraph revolutionised communication by allowing messages to travel almost instantly over long distances.
